One of the most spectacular destinations in New Zealand, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a sight to behold! Located on the North Island, 12km northwest of Te Kuiti, you will find beautiful 30 million year old limestone caves that are home to these unique luminous wonders. The reason why they shine so bright is because their tails are bioluminescent – meaning that the chemicals they secrete react with the oxygen to create light! Without this, they wouldn’t be able to catch their prey for dinner. To find out much more about the Waitomo Caves, it is recommended to take their informative tour, where an expert guide provides you a better understanding on the historical and geological significance. Also I know many of you will be tempted to take a photo, but just keep in mind to bring a camera that does not use flash, as it could hurt these stunning creatures!
